What does my posture have to do with my back pain?

We perform 1000’s of treatments each month in our clinics for patients with back pain. One of the most common questions that I get from my patients when I am explaining our program is; “What does my posture have to do with my back pain?”

Science has proven that bad posture or poor posture will cause the many severe symptoms. I have created a small list, of the 5 most common problems associated with poor Posture.

1. Some postural positions will cause a compromise to neural tissues by changing blood flow to the spinal cord.

2. Flexed posture will cause disc damage and disc degeneration.

3. The most obvious is increased muscle tension and decreased muscle function. We see this most often with people who sit for long periods of time at the computer.

4. Sustained abnormal posture will lead to prolonged muscle contraction that will cause hypoxia (a decrease in oxygen to the muscles) that will result in tissue damage.

5. Connective tissue will adapt to changes in posture and very often restrict movement. The result is a decrease in motion. (Stiffness)

You need to be mindful of your posture, if you don’t the result is a break down in the tissues, discs, bones and even nerves. Fix your posture and fix your life.

The chain reaction and elbow pain while golfing!

Recently I had a patient come into the Wheaton clinic with severe pain while golfing. His pain was in his elbow. The pain was so bad that he couldn’t golf. So speaking from experience this pain was ruining his life. A life without golf is hardly worth living.

When I did my evaluation I found that the symptoms were in the elbow, it was swollen. But the problem was in his neck and shoulder. The reason for the symptoms is what we call the chain reaction. You can have a chain reaction in the back neck or anywhere there are joints connected (The Whole Body).

Here is what I discovered; the patient had a restriction in the collar bone where it attaches to the sternum. This was causing a decrease in mobility of both the shoulder joint and the shoulder blade. In the end the decreased function of the entire shoulder complex was adding stress to the elbow. The elbow couldn’t tolerate the stress of the golf swing because it was trying to do the work of the shoulder. The elbow is not designed to do the work of the shoulder and it was breaking down.

The result is we fixed the shoulder and the elbow pain went away. And he can hit a golf ball again. God Bless America! A life fulfilled! This problem was a direct result of the chain reaction.

The Chain Reaction of Back Pain!!domino

People ask me often about the connection of old injuries in their ankles or knees that might lead to a current episode of back pain. My answer is usually “it is a chain reaction”! Then they respond “a What?”

Because all the joints of the body are very closely connected and are very reliant on each other for movement, when one joint doesn’t function at it best it will often start to cause problems in other joints. Old injuries to the ankle will often lead to what is called hyperpronation of the foot. Hyperpronation is when the foot starts to roll in and give the appearance of flat feet. When the feet become hpyerpronated the knee starts to go inward. This is the chain reaction at work. Next the inward knee will start to cause increase in forward rotation of the pelvis, this will lead to an increase in stress on the discs of the spine. The increased stress on the spine and discs will result in back pain, and cause degenerated discs. If the hyperpronation is left unresolved the result is continued breakdown of the discs making the problem worse.

Our goal and any goal for eliminating back pain is to decrease the unnecessary stresses on all joints so that there not any chain reactions that might lead to pain. We look to restore joint function by getting all the muscles doing their part.

I conquered my chronically severe back pain and am able to live life completely normal without pain, and to prove it, I am playing in the BMW Championship PRO/AM. My goal is to show you that you can live and play Pain Free by using my scientifically proven system!”

For 10 years I did not play golf because of my back pain, and the few times I did for 2 days after I could not walk. I have spent 15 years working with specialist from all over the world, trying to eliminate my back pain. My goal was to eliminate my pains so that I could live a normal life and most importantly I wanted to play golf again. When I first started my quest to eliminate back pain I was able to live my life without pain, but I was not able to golf. Golfing still was causing me pain. I completely avoided golf years thinking, I could avoid pain if I could live without golf.

Then I met with 2 of the top physical therapist for the PGA tour and learned a few insider secrets. Now I am playing (hitting golf balls) everyday, and I don’t have any pain. I live a completely normal life and I am back on track with my golf game. To prove to the world you can play golf without any back pain I have committed to playing in the BMW championship PRO/Am in Chicago on September 9th 2009. I will keep everybody posted on what I am doing and what can be done for your back pains while golfing.

My goal was no pain and better golf, and truly thaty are one in the same. This should be your goal as well.

Lessons from Tiger Woods to help you eliminate back pain!

I was watching an interview of Tiger Woods today, form the U.S. Open. He said some great things that I thought might be of help for some people that are suffering from Chronic Back Pain. I watch these interviews of Tiger to see what gems he might come up with. Tiger being the greatest golfer in history might have a little insight into what it takes to get the job done.

Tiger was talking about his practicing over the last couple of weeks, in preparation for the U.S. Open. Here is what he said today……

“Like anything you feel like you always get better, that’s the whole idea of practicing. Make sure I become more comfortable with what we are working on and become more efficient at doing it!”

When we are working on your back pain, part of our goal is to retrain muscles to do the proper job. Very often we use the wrong muscles to perform specific activities. This leads to our bodies being less efficient, when we are less efficient the result is a breakdown. The breakdown leads to pain. Just like Tiger when his swing in not 100% efficient it is not as effective. To compete at a level of the U.S. Open you need to be 100% efficient. If not you don’t have a chance.

Our treatments are like Tiger’s practice rounds, we need to get your body more efficient and comfortable. It does take time, although when we accomplish this, you feel better and are able to take on the world. You will look forward to the day!

Tiger Says “I am looking forward to going out and competing.”

You will say the same!

Danny Gans Died of Back Pain?

Sometimes we think back pain is just back pain, and it won’t kill you. If you don’t know, Danny Gans is a well known entertainer in Las Vegas. He died recently from a reaction to a well known pain killer. He had a history of chronic back pain. (The kind of pain I used to have.) His pains started when he was a minor league baseball player. Like everybody he suffered a few injuries that then turned into a chronic condition, which is how these things usually happen.

To get relief from the pain he was taking pain killers. The result, in his situation, was he had a reaction to the medication that resulted in his death. It is not the back pain that will kill you; it is the effect it has on your life that will kill you.

drugs1

This weekend we will be having our 1st episode of our TV program “Ask Dr Jeff” it will be featured on CLTV. On this show there is a story about

Henry Meyer a 92 year old marine.

Henry also had complications from pain medication, similar to what happened to Danny Gans. He suffered from severe back pain and the only relief

he ever got was from a common pain medication. His reliance on the medication resulted in a reaction that leads to him being rushed to the hospital. The situation was so bad in the hospital that a priest was brought in to read him his last rights. Well he luckily survived that experience then decided to give our treatment a chance. Well I am please to tell you Henry had sever back pain and now he is much better. He lives his life to its fullest walks 2 miles; golf’s 2 times per week and spends quality pain free time with his wife.

Look for our show, this weekend.

Back pain is the result of working too many hours!

Recently I was playing golf at my churches charity outing. I was paired with 2 people I didn’t know. One of the golfers I was with, after hearing what I did for a living, started to ask questions about some pain he was having. He stated that he was having some upper back pains in his neck and shoulders. But he only had the pain when he golfed. He was thinking golf was the reason for the paingolf1 and was considering not golfing any more.

I asked him a few questions and found out he works many hours and works in a seated position. Like many people he spent a good part of his day working on his computer. Because we were on the golf course and not in a clinical setting I was basing my opinion on his history. I told him that if you are seated for too long in a hunched over position working on a computer is will result in an increase in strain on the tissues of the spine causing the pain.

The good news is that he doesn’t need to give up golf. The golfing is not the problem. The golf only aggravated a condition that was caused by his work. So I told him to give up work and spend more time golfing….. No just kidding. I told him it would probably be a quick fix and we could help him eliminate his pain. Our program is designed to restore the spine and biomechanics. This will eliminate the pain and also help him become a better golfer.

Activities You Need To Avoid So You Can Eliminate Your Back Pain!

I was talking to a patient today who asked “what activities should I avoid at work? What things will cause my back pain to get worse?” Well the after having thought about it I realized there are 5 activities that cause back pain or will make back pain worse! All of the activities center around one idea.

I have talked about the hip hinge in many of my earlier blogs. The whole idea about the hip hinge is that a forward bending is very bad for the spine and back. So the 5 important activities to avoid throughout your life involve an unnecessary increase in stress on your spine.

1. Frequent bending and twisting

2. Lifting pulling and pushing

3. Repeated full lumbar flexion bending forward

4. Static work posture maintaining spine flexion

5. Prolonged seated postures

If you avoid these 5 activities you will increase the longevity of your spine and increase the quality of your life. By steering clear of these activities you can decrease the likelihood of serious problems associated with your spine. Live long and live without pain.

Greg Norman reveals the hidden secret to the golf swing!

I was reading a book yesterday and I came across the hidden secret to a good golf swing. Greg Norman was quoted as saying the following.

“While programs for professionals and recreational golfers are vastly different, the goal of any of any program should be the same: to change body composition and improve the efficiency of the neuromuscular system.”

So you ask where is the hidden secret? His statement of improve the efficiency of the neuromuscular system…… I have given 636 lectures in my career talking about improving function and the most frequent question is “what is function?”. People don’t understand function. Function is you ability to perform an activity efficiently. This is what Greg Norman is referring to. This is the hidden secret.

I am releasing 10 vides titled the secrets to a better golf swing. I will be exploring more about improving function. To start now and improve you function click on the bok for the top ten tips to keep your back strong. Start with these ten tips and in 2 weeks the videos will be done.

Local PGA professional eliminates his back pain and adds 30 yards to his 300 yard drives.

Recently we had a patient into our clinic he had pain in his back and severe pain is his knees. The pain was getting so bad that he was having a hard time performing many of the responsibilities of his job. This was a big problem for him because his job required full strength in his upper body and lower body. Chris is a PGA professional who earns his living swinging a golf club. He was in a position where he wasn’t sure how much longer he was going to manage the pain. He tried to alter his swing to compensate for the pains. the results were not good.

He decided to undergo our treatment for his back and his knees. We put him through the progressive disc rejuvenation, in conjunction with our stabilization program. this program focuses on the 4 main components of function; Posture, nervous system activation, muscle function and biomechanics. When Chris was finished with our program he stated that he felt better. The pain was gone. But he said that wasn’t the good part, he can now as a result of our treatment hit his drives 30 yards further (and straighter). He was already hitting the drive 300+ yards. So watch out PGA Chris is moving up.

Golf, like life requires us to use all our muscles and joints efficiently. When we don’t the result is pain. If you are a golfer or a weekend warrior, or just want to watch TV with out pain, function is what you need.

If you are interested in learning more about the current swine flu situation and best practices for avoiding infection, you can get the latest information from the United States Government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) website at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

Below is a summary of the CDC’s best practices for avoiding infection:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
  • Clean your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Practice other good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

CLTV Announces Ask Dr Jeff as its Newest TV Show!

You may have seen us spotlighted on CLTV’s “Living Healthy Chicago”, Lou Cannellis and Dan Hampton have highlighted some of the advances we have been making with back pain. Well there has been so much interest concerning solving peoples back problems that CLTV has committed to using the format for a half hour show. We will be answering people’s questions and offering more tips to keep you spine healthy. We will also be talking a little about phase 2 of our progressive disc study. The progress that we are making with eliminating herniated discs is truly fascinating. We will be highlighting several patients, who have had severe herniated discs. One of which is Allen Gill.

Allen Gill came in recently and he was talking about his back problems and his success. He is a Healthcare professional who had the largest herniated disc that I have ever seen. He went through our program and got better. I don’t mean he felt better I mean his herniated disc was better, gone! If you are a SOX fan you know Hawk Haralson would say HE GONE! (He, being the herniated disc.)

Well the important part of the story is that when Allen Gill first got the herniated disc he was so bad that even the thought of taking a vacation was painful. At the time he had to change plans for current and future vacations. He wasn’t sure if he was going to have anymore vacations. Not a good thought. We work our whole lives to be able to take some time off. It was looking like he might not be able to take any time off. I am happy to report that he is taking vacations, Good ones, without pain…… Way to go Allen.

The Number One Exercise for Golf!

Recently my patients have been asking more questions about golf, and my top ten tips. I am sure this is because the weather is finally getting warmer here in Chicago; it has been a long winter. Everyone is waiting on the top ten tips for golfers, and I promise they are coming in the next couple of weeks. When I tell them that there are ten tips, they say how about just one (The number one exercise for golf). What they really want to know is “What is the best exercise for golf?” They all want one exercise!

At first glance it seems like an easy question, but there are a few variables that need to be addressed first. Most importantly, an exercise, or group of exercises to improve one’s golf game will depend on a person’s fitness level and their functional level. Their functional level is determined by what they can do before pain develops, or what they can do before the load causes them pain or discomfort. This is important because 100% of all my patients have pain when they come in, that’s why they come in, and golf can be very painful.

Many patients say but golf is just golf. Why would the exercises be different for everybody? If you look at a golf pro, several of which are our patients, and compare them to the amateur golfer, the functional level is drastically different. Tour pros hit the ball farther by almost 30% than the average golfer, but the forces at the spine are 80% less for the tour pro. This is a direct result of the increased functional level of the professional golfer, they are more efficient. The forces distributed to the spine in the recreational golfer are as high as 8 times a person’s body weight at impact, truly a component of their decreased functional level. We know that the stress on your spine is the result of your functional level, or lack thereof. The goal in our clinic is to decrease the stress on the spine, or increase your functional level. We know a lot about functional level it is what we do all day long. So golfers need to increase their functional level, and this will make you a better golfer.

I have developed the top ten tips for golfers around the component of adding function to body. By increasing function you decrease the load and stress on the spine, while increasing your ability to move efficiently. So the answer to the question is not that there is only one exercise there are ten necessary to increase function. Now, of these ten there is one better than all the rest, and that makes it number one because it is the best. But if you don’t do the other nine you will not get all the benefit.

Treatment at the Illinois Back Institute will eliminate your back pain, and make you a better golfer!

Not too long ago I saw a patient in our countryside clinic named Nick Costanzi. He suffered for 15 years with what we call chronic back pain. The type of pain that doesn’t go away and usually gets worse with activities. He also suffered with periodic sciatica (pain down his leg). He had tried many treatments by several chiropractors, neuro surgeons, and physical therapist and none of them helped. He stated that his golf game was suffering because of his back pains. We discovered he had a bulging disc, a degenerated disc, and muscles that were out of balance.

He underwent our back program and started to feel better, for the first time in years he wasn’t waking up with back pain. He noted his stiffness was almost completely gone. For the first time in almost 5 years he was able to shoot a 79on the golf course, and he was proud! The biggest improvement for his golf swing was the increase in flexibility resulting in morecontrol in his golf swing……

These stories are very common in our clinic. Patients undergo our treatments and start to feel better, and more importantly become better golfers. To be in your 70s and shoot in the 70s is very impressive. I will be exploring more in the next couple of updates, how and why our treatment makes you a better golfer. Part of the addition of the top ten tips for golfer came from some of the things I will be talking about in the next posts.

Half of all recreational golfers have back pain, and one third of all professional golfers have back pain!

After I wrote the article about Tiger Woods and back pain, I received several question about how common back pain is with golfers. Interestingly enough just this morning I was reading about Boo Weekly sleeping in a funny position and waking with intense back pain. His back pain was so bad that he wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to compete in this week’s golf tournament, and he is the defending champ. It is a funny thing about these professional golfers and not taking care of their spines, just being aware of some really simple things (like my top ten tips) will make a huge difference. These golfers make millions of dollars and don’t do the necessary things to take care of their spines. Part of my motivation for the top ten tips was to show you how to do simple activities without causing damage to your spine.

So then the question becomes “what do golfers need to be aware of?”

A good place to start for golfers is with my top ten tips for a strong flexible and pain free spine. It is like the fundamentals for a healthy spine. If you did just these 10 tips you would be much better off. But in reality golfers have special needs. With that in mind I have created the top ten tips for golfers to prevent back pain. I worked real hard to find the ten best things. If you do these ten things you will have a healthier spine for golf and more importantly if you do these things you will actually be a better golfer! Did Tiger Woods win the Arnold Palmer Invitational suffering with back pain?

In my blog yesterday I mentioned how back pain can come from injuries in other areas of your body. (We call this the KINETIC CHAIN) One of the biggest contributors to back pain that I see in our clinics is problems starting in the knees. As most people know, recently Tiger Woods underwent a major knee surgery. The result was Tiger walking with a limp, what we call a modified gait pattern. This was most notable right after the surgery. It is very common that after this type of surgery you can develop some form of back pain.

I have seen Tiger play live on several occasions over the last couple of years. Most recently I saw him playing on Sunday at Bay Hill. I have spent the last 15 years of my life observing movement patterns, and I noticed Tiger was still limping a bit. (it is very suttle) I also noticed that on several occasions on the greens when he was waiting for Zach Johnson and Sean O’Hair to putt, he was doing a lot of twisting trying to loosen up his back. This behavior is definitely something that I had not noticed in the past. He was stretching similar to what Fred Couples does when he is trying to loosen up his notoriously bad back.

The one thing about Tiger is with or without a severe problem, he is going to win. Does he have back pain? I don’t think it matters. He is still Tiger. I don’t know if he has Back pain but I do know that his surgery to his knee pre disposes him to immediate and future possibilities of back pain. The important lesson here is that if you have had problems with your knees in the past or in the present, there is a good chance it will affect your back. Have it checked out so you can prevent future problems that may have a dramatic effect on your life. Although I do know he is in good hands I have worked professionally with some of his Physical Therapist. They know what they are doing so if he does have back pain it shouldn’t last too long.

We stood on the side of the 18 fairway on that Sunday with the sun slowly setting and watched one of the greatest sports moments I have attended. I was a very surreal event as he hit that putt and the crowd exploded….. Tiger is at his best with or without back pain!
